Hey Chemies!

Chemies? How's that sound? Y'all feeling that? I'm still trying it out, but I have to think of a playful, but respectable name to call my community, Suggestions are welcomed!

Anyways, let's get to the topic at hand.

I'm consider myself DECENT when it comes to the makeup world. Application as well as formulation (this is something I plan to improve). However, I'm en expert (toot, toot) when it comes to skin health.

Over the years, I've learned a lot about proper makeup application and the intriciate details that go into sculpting the face with a makeup brush. I've been fortunate enough to learn from professional makeup artists and being enrolled at Youtube University has took me even further.

Learning my undertone, face shape, skin type, skin sensitives, etc. was no easy feat. But, I walked so that y'all good run and am sharing this free game on easy ways to choose the best foundation for you!

Tip 1: KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE

Do you have oily skin, dry skin, combination skin, or sensitive skin? Knowing this information is key in selecting a foundation that is complementary and less likely to cause skin irritation, breakouts, or other skin imbalances. If you're unsure of your skin type, it's best to seek a professional evalution from an esthetician or dermatologist. I'll tell you what foundation to go for based off your skin type...

  • Oily skin - Matte or oil-free foundations are best to prevent shine

  • Dry skin - Hydrating or dewy foundations provide moisture

  • Combination skin - A balanced formula that controls oil but hydrates dry patches works well

  • Sensitive skin - Look for foundations with calming ingredients, free from fragrance or harsh chemicals

Tip 2: MATCH FOUNDATION TO YOUR UNDERTONE

Now this is the part that tripped me up. I assumed that because I am brown skinned and sun-kissed that meant I was a warm girl. I would purchase mocha foundations with warm undertones and feel awkward in my own skin because something was off. Eventually, I came across content describing the different undertones in complexion and how to determine yours. I can't remember the year or month, but it was on this day that I learned I was a cool girl. There's a simple test. Look at your wrist and check the color of your veins.

  • Cool undertones - Blue or purple veins. Opt for foundations with pink or blue tones

  • Warm undertones - Green veins. Opt for foundations with yellow or golden tones

  • Neutral undertones - A mix of both. Choose a foundation that's balanced and neutral

Tip 3: TEST BEFORE YOU BUY

It's simple. Ask for help! Before you purchase any item, ask to test it out. If you're shopping at MAC, Sephora, ULTA, or similar beauty stores, ask a clerk for assistance. These individuals are usually extremely knowledgeable of the products in the store and can share advice on foundations that could work for you! Activate your throat chakra, thanks!

Tip 4: CONSIDER COVERAGE AND FINISH

Different foundations provide varying levels of coverage and finishes. Different events and/or looks call for different types of foundation. If you don't have a strict budget, invest in different options. We love variety. Here's some basic info for you:

  • Full coverage - Great for those who want to cover blemishes or uneven skin tone. I typically go for this look when participating in photoshoots or events where optics are involved

  • Medium coverage - Perfect for everyday wear, giving a more natural finish while still evening out skin tone. This is my "going-out" look

  • Light coverage - Ideal for a no-makeup, "barely there" look. => My personal fav that I dabble in just because

Tip 5: DON'T FORGET ABOUT SPF

Put Skin Health First! So many foundations now include SPF protection. Incorporating SPF in your skin routine helps reduce blemishes, skin-aging, and dark marks. I recommend looking for a foundation that has an SPF 15 or higher. If you'll be out in the sun for extended periods at a time, maybe go with at least an SPF 35. Even if your foundation doesn't include an SPF, you can apply a thin layer of a moisturizing SPF to your skin before your makeup application.

Finding the perfect foundation is a journey. If you're anything like me, you may get lighter in the winter and darker in the summer and need to invest into purchasing mutiple shades of foundations. Just another example of how being a girl is so harddddd!!!!

Anywhoot! I hope this information helped. Consider these tips when it's time to re-up on makeup products!
